Ryanair boosts bonuses for staff spotting oversized cabin bags
Starting this November, Ryanair will increase the reward for staff who intercept passengers with oversized cabin luggage. The bonus will rise from €1.50 to €2.50 per bag, and the previous €80 monthly cap will be removed, allowing staff to earn unlimited incentives.
CEO Michael O’Leary emphasized this move is designed to reinforce baggage rules, keep boarding efficient, and ensure compliance:
We want everyone to follow the rules. If you comply, there’s no issue. We run a very efficient, affordable, low-cost airline – and we’re not letting anyone get in the way.
Only about 0.1% of Ryanair passengers — around 200,000 per year — are fined for oversized bags, yet they still disrupt operations and may face fees up to €75 at the gate.
Strict rules and heavy penalties
Ryanair enforces some of the strictest hand luggage rules in the low-cost aviation sector. Passengers travelling with the cheapest fare can only bring a small bag of up to 40 x 30 x 20 cm that must fit under the seat in front.

Any additional bag – such as a cabin trolley – can only be taken on board if booked in advance. Those who fail to comply face on-the-spot charges of up to €75 per bag, with non-compliant luggage being placed in the aircraft hold.
This policy mirrors industry trends —S wissport does something similar for easyJet staff, offering bonuses per flagged bag.
