Tourists will no longer be allowed to rent motorbikes in Bali, Indonesia

In a move aimed at curbing bad behavior and promoting road safety, local authorities have decided to ban tourists from renting motorbikes on the Indonesian island of Bali. The decision comes in response to a series of traffic offenses committed by foreigners, prompting officials to take action.

Under the new rules, visitors are encouraged to hire cars instead of motorbikes during their stay on the island. Talking to CNN, Governor Wayan Koster emphasized the importance of tourists acting responsibly, stating “tourists should act as such” and urging them to rely on travel agents rather than venturing out on motorbikes without proper clothes, helmets or licenses.

In Bali, an extremely popular tourist destination, motorbikes have long been the preferred mode of transportation among tourists, allowing them to navigate conveniently. However, recent reports in local media indicate that over 170 foreign nationals have been involved in various traffic violations between February and March 2023. Offenses such as drunk driving, speeding and using counterfeit license plates have now prompted the authorities to take stricter measures.

Tourism has long played a vital role in the local economy, contributing around 60 percent to the island’s annual GDP. Even though the resumption of international travel has brought some relief after the Covid-19 pandemic severely impacted businesses, the truth is that growing disrespect and bad behavior among tourists have motivated residents to demand local authorities to crack down on the lack of road regulations.

Motor vehicle incidents have proven to be a significant cause of concern in Bali, with 405 fatalities reported in 2020, according to the Bali Sun. The ban on tourists renting motorbikes is expected to be implemented later this year, although no specific control measures have yet been determined by the government. While the decision has received support from the majority of the locals who hope to see an improvement in road safety and a reduction in improper behavior, not everyone is pleased with the plans, with some people expressing concerns about the impact this measure might have on tourism arrivals.

As Bali moves forward with these new regulations, the island’s authorities face the task of striking a balance between maintaining safety/cultural authenticity and preserving its much-needed status as a popular tourist destination.
