Although rating tourist attractions around the world can be pretty subjective, there are still a few factors that allow you to actually compare them. Specialty website Stasher came up with their very own set of criteria, according to which the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in Los Angeles, and the Grand Bazaar, in Istanbul, took up the undesirable top spots among the worst tourist attractions.

Stasher, the world’s first luggage storage network, took on the task of creating a ranking based on all kinds of different factors, such as the popularity of a place across social media platforms and the overall review ratings on travel websites. The results may be surprising… to say the least!

The worst tourist attractions in the world

The Hollywood Walk of Fame, in Los Angeles, was once again (just like back in 2019) recognized as the worst tourist attraction in the whole world. This year, the famous star-studded boulevard received a rating of only 3.42/10. It received the second lowest review ratings on TripAvisor, coming last in Google reviews. The overall rating was also poorly affected by the low global safety index in the US (3.85).

The second place on the list, with a rating of 3.48/10, went to the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul. It is undoubtedly a historic place (as well as one of the oldest markets in the world), but visitors do not appreciate its atmosphere. This place scored poorly across all areas – the safety level was rated at 2.8/5, and users also complained about the long distance from the nearest airport (45.7 km).

The last attraction to score less than 4/10 is the Taj Mahal (3.83/10). India’s most striking landmark was negatively impacted due to the huge distances between the legendary mausoleum and the nearest airport (219 km). Also, regarding accommodation options in the surroundings, the Taj Mahal scored 7.1/10, the fourth lowest of all attractions.

Hungary Budapest

The top spot in the ranking was attributed to the Hungarian Parliament Building in Budapest, with a score of 7.34/10. The imposing neo-Gothic building overlooking the Danube is the seat of the Hungarian National Assembly and a must-see for anyone visiting the capital city. In addition to excellent ratings on TripAdvisor and Google, accommodation options on Booking.com were rated 8.6/10. Plus, regarding social, TikTok videos featuring the Parliament were viewed 887 million times!

The second-best rated attraction is the iconic Disneyland in Paris, scoring 7.17/10 in the survey. Among all the places included in the analysis, it boasts the largest number of views on TikTok – as many as 7.9 billion. In addition, hotel services were rated at 8.6/10, while also receiving a score of 4.5/5 stars in Google reviews.

The bronze medal is heading straight to Iceland, with the geothermal Icelandic spa resort Blue Lagoon getting the impressive score of 7.15/10. This high rate was largely impacted by its impeccable safety index of 1.1/5, which only proves how Iceland is perceived by tourists as one of the safest countries in the world to visit.

Other popular tourist attractions

Not a single Irish tourist attraction was featured in the Stasher ranking. In the top 20, readers can find the likes of the Acropolis of Athens (8th – 6.91/10), the Roman Colosseum (12th – 6.78/10) or the famous Sydney Opera House (16th – 6.67/10).

Other popular attractions ended up ranking surprisingly low. For instance, the French icon of the Notre Dame Cathedral (6.24/10) only ranked #42, while Machu Picchu in Peru (6.16/10) got #44 and the Eiffel Tower in Paris (6.04/10) #51. Further to the east, the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt (5.59/10) ranked #76, while the Great Wall of China (5.05/10) only got #91.

The ranking was based on the sum of points obtained by each tourist attractions across 6 different categories: TripAdvisor reviews, Google reviews, distance from the airport, safety index (based on WorldPopulationReview country rankings), quality of local accommodation (average Booking.com reviews for hotels standing in close proximity to a given tourist attraction), and TikTok popularity (cumulative views).
